Contemporary Ceramic Art of Oaxaca

This lively workshop features four artists from Oaxaca demonstrating their unique styles, with an opportunity for hands-on work following demos. Join in this very special intercultural opportunity, bringing together Oregon and Oaxaca potters.

Rumble on the River

Community Forum on Zenith Energy & The Critical Energy Infrastructure Hub

This is the third “Rumble On The River” in a series of free community forums.

These forums are designed to inform and activate us on the threats to public health, safety, climate justice and our environment stemming from the Critical Energy Infrastructure (CEI) Hub and Zenith Energy’s oil-by-rail operations. The CEI Hub is a six- mile stretch of aging tank farms located in NW Portland along the Willamette River. Within the Hub is Zenith, bringing dangerous oil trains through our communities.

The CEI Hub holds more than 90% of all liquid fuel in Oregon. The entire Hub is in an earthquake liquefaction zone. The occurrence of the predicted earthquake would be catastrophic for our communities, the ecosystem and the entire lower Columbia River.

FIRE & ICE: Wood fired ceramics from East Creek Art Center

  • Walters Cultural Arts Center Hillsboro, OR United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The magic of nature comes to life in this complimentary exhibition of fire and ice. Artists from East Creek Art, a community art studio and retreat, feature ceramic works fired in an Anagama wood-fired kiln. The collaborative firing process takes several days, with all works being “decorated by the river of flame and ash.” Alongside the unique vessels and wares, stunning photographs of ice formations on the Columbia River Gorge and thermal pools of Yellowstone National Park by photographer Don Jacobson spotlight fascinating textures, colors, and patterns from amazing terrains.

KATY’S WOOD-FIRED CERAMICS AND VESSELS WILL BE ON DISPLAY

Katy McFadden is a ceramic sculptor and printmaker who connects deeply with nature, yielding spirited and transformative pieces. With many years of creating, teaching and traveling, Katy uses her art to foster understanding and exemplify the commonalities between people. For decades, Katy has used her artistic platform to communicate the importance of nourishing the environment, both the collective and the individual.

Working from her nature-backed home studio in Southwest Portland, many of Katy’s pieces – including her human-scale forms – are fired in her large gas-fired kiln and as well as East Creek Anagama kiln. Katy teaches at Clackamas Community College, where she offers courses that highlight her artistic philosophy and inspire the next generations of creators.

In their first exhibition, the Braided River Exhibition weaves a Story of Displacement and Industrialization on the Lower Willamette River intertwining art and historical information to guide the viewer through time. Life-size historical portraits, painted by a diverse group of local artist-activists tell the history of the many multifaceted communities that have lived along the river.

Through painting, installation, photography and text… attention to Native American ancestors who stewarded the land and diverse populations who worked on the river are showcased.
